Braves Transactions: 6/24/17 – 6/25/17

Signed OF Carlos Baerga Jr., RHP Hayden Deal, and RHP Walter Borkovich to minor league contracts.

Carlos Baerga Jr.

You should remember Baerga’s father, a great 2B for the Indians in the mid-90’s. He batted .291 for his career, but more importantly to you, he did this:

I don’t have any idea if Junior has prospect bona fides, but the signing has to be a nice moment for the Baerga family. The John Hart connection from those Indians days probably played a significant role in this signing.

Hayden Deal

One of my favorite things about late round draft picks or, in Deal’s case, free agent signings after a post-draft workout, is the local stories that pop up. Baseball scouting circles may not be abuzz over Deal, but local newspapers are. Here’s an article on Deal.

After exclusive relief duty his first 3 years at Presbyterian, the 6-4 righty had some success as a starter this spring, managing to maintain his strikeout an inning pace after transitioning to longer appearances.

Walter Borkovich

A reliever out of Michigan State, Borkovich went undrafted despite a 2.01 senior ERA, plus a 2.53 ERA last year in the Cape Cod League. He doesn’t induce many whiffs, but he reportedly throws into the mid-90’s and has a groundball-generating slider. Here’s one of those local stories on Borkovich.
