Placed C Kurt Suzuki on the bereavement list

Suzuki takes a leave of absence to attend his grandmother’s funeral, and our thoughts are with him and his family.

Released LHP Eric O’Flaherty

The Atlanta Braves hoped O’Flaherty could rediscover his old self with a second year back home in the organization, but it turned out to be more of the same ineffectiveness that’s sapped the lefty’s value since 2014. It’s frustrating to watch, because he’s young enough to still be good. Here’s hoping he gets another shot somewhere down the line, even if that seems like a bit of a long shot.

Purchased the contract of C Anthony Recker from AAA Gwinnett

With Suzuki on leave, familiar face Anthony Recker gets to rejoin the 40-man roster and, briefly, rejoin the big league club. 2016, the Summer of Recker, saw him hit .278/.394/.433 for the Braves. 2017, on the other hand, sees him hitting .223/.301/.381 in AAA. His stay in Atlanta should be brief, although I’d expect his return in September.

Promoted RHP Junior Rincon to AAA; Demoted Rincon to A+

Demoted RHP Caleb Dirks to A+; Promoted Dirks to AAA

I’m not going to pretend to know exactly why the team switched Rincon and Dirks for a couple of days, but I will guess. Rincon was rested, while Dirks threw two innings on the 20th, so my guess is the team wanted Rincon as an emergency option on the 21st and 22nd. Both were returned by Sunday, and both pitched Sunday with their normal clubs. Minor league transactions can be weird, folks.

Promoted RHP Andres Santiago from A+ Florida to AAA Gwinnett

The 27 year old should probably keep a bag packed at all times.  His year so far, just since April 1st:

  • April 10 – Assigned to Danville
  • April 13 – Assigned to Florida
  • April 25 – Assigned to Danville
  • April 29 – Assigned to Rome
  • May 10 – Assigned to Florida
  • May 20 – Assigned to Danville
  • May 28 – Assigned to Florida
  • June 2 – Assigned to Gwinnett
  • June 4 – Assigned to Florida
  • June 8 – Assigned to Mississippi
  • June 11 – Assigned to Florida
  • July 21 – Assigned to Gwinnett

Promoted OF Xavier Avery from A+ Florida to AAA Gwinnett

When Avery was demoted to Florida, we speculated that it could be for logistical reasons, and it turns out that was probably it, as the OF returned almost immediately. He’s still hitting quite well, and if Atlanta trades an outfielder in the coming week, I could see Avery getting some action with the big league club this season.

Demoted RHP Evan Phillips from AAA Gwinnett to A+ Florida

Phillips struggled in AA, got called up to AAA, where his results were better (3.00 ERA), but the ingredients were still troublesome (5.57 DRA, 6.0 BB/9). He heads back to high-A, where his performance a year ago (1.27 ERA / 3.15 FIP / 3.75 DRA) was more stable.
