Atlanta calls up RHP Kyle Wright from AAA Gwinnett
With Josh Tomlin fresh off a 58 pitch performance, Atlanta opted to look up I-85 for a rested long relief reinforcement, and Kyle Wright, due for a start Wednesday, fit the bill. Wright, as you might remember, previously made three starts for the big league club. Unfortunately, only one was of the quality sort, a six inning, two run outing against the offensively hapless Marlins.
Wright’s time in AAA hasn’t been much kinder. Averaging less than five innings per start, Wright has been rocked to the tune of an 8.66 ERA. However, half his AAA starts have been helpful, and he’s coming off his longest outing of the season, a seven-inning victory last Friday.
Wright hasn’t really earned his way to the majors, so this call-up should probably be seen as temporary. He’s someone who can throw multiple innings if the team gets into a long extra-inning affair or some sort of blowout. When Tomlin is rested, you could see this reversed.
Atlanta options LHP Grant Dayton to AAA Gwinnett
It’s easy to question the decision to option Dayton, at least at a surface level. In four innings across five appearances, Dayton has yet to allow a run. That seemed unlikely to continue, though, as Dayton didn’t miss many bats. Opponents are hitting .364 against his fastball, an offering that barely cracks 90 mph. Dayton’s biggest strength, really, has been an ability to throw strikes in front of a fanbase shell-shocked from exposure to Jesse Biddle‘s 2019 performance.
Though Dayton’s stuff and performance so far doesn’t exactly suggest he’s the answer to the team’s issues in the bullpen, he is a lefty with some good results, so you should expect to see him again in Atlanta sometime soon. Dayton has pitched three of the last four days, so his unavailability tonight may have been the tipping point for the decision to option him. He may be back in Atlanta before he even takes the mound for the Stripers.
