Weekly Round-Up
GWINNETT:
The Gwinnett Stripers wrapped up the road portion of their 2022 schedule in Memphis against the Redbirds this week. Gwinnett split the six-game set with strong starting pitching in the three wins and bullpen issues in the three losses. The Stripers are now 68-77 on the season and will finish off their 2022 season with a short three-game set against the Louisville Bats.
The starting pitching received three quality starts to wrap up the week. Jared Shuster had the best start of the week, and his best Triple-A start, on Friday when he gave up just a two-run home run and three baserunners over seven innings while striking out ten on an economical 85 pitches. Darius Vines gave up three runs in six innings on Saturday while Dylan Dodd also gave up three runs over 6.2 innings in a solid first Triple-A start. Earlier in the week, Freddy Tarnok gave up just a solo home run over five innings on Tuesday while Kyle Muller had a rough start on Wednesday with five runs allowed over six innings with two home runs.
Michael Tonkin had a standout week for the bullpen with two one-inning scoreless outings with six strikeouts and two saves. Victor Vodnik had a scoreless inning with a save while Jacob Webb had a prefect two-inning appearance with two strikeouts. William Woods had two scoreless outings covering 2.2 innings.
Newly arrived outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy performed nicely in his first week at Triple-A by homering in his first game and going 4-for-15 with five walks and four RBI (.267/.429/.467). Outfielder Jake Marisnick had a solid week in going 9-for-27 with a double, home run, four stolen bases, and two outfield assists (.333/.357/.481). Taylor Motter continued his fine work since joining Gwinnett (.278/.435/.500, double, home run, five walks) while Tyler White hit safely in all five games in which he played this week (8-for-18, double, two walks, .444/.500/.500).

Transaction Round-Up
- 9/18/2022: 2B Ozzie Albies placed on the 10-day injured list (right pinky finger fracture); IF Rylan Bannon recalled from AAA Gwinnett
Albies was only two days returned from the injured list for his fractured foot when he jammed his pinky sliding into second base. He may return if the team makes a deep postseason run. Bannon was claimed off waivers from Baltimore back in August and had been hitting .323/.432/.477 in 20 games for Gwinnett
- 9/19/2022: RHP Bryce Elder recalled from AAA Gwinnett; RHP William Woods optioned to AAA Gwinnett
With Spencer Strider coming down with an oblique strain after his previous start, Elder once again stepped into the spot starter role and threw 5.2 solid innings against Washington. In four spot starts over the last two months, Elder has gone 21 innings, allowed 5 earned runs (2.14 ERA), walked 7, and has struck out 24. He may get two more starts before the end of the season.
- 9/20/2022: RHP Jay Jackson sent outright to AAA Gwinnett
Jackson had been designated for assignment last week to clear a spot for Ozzie Albies on the 40-man roster. Jackson cleared waivers and will finish out the season with Gwinnett.
- 9/20/2022: OF Justyn-Henry Malloy assigned to AAA Gwinnett from AA Mississippi
Similarly to last season when catcher Shea Langeliers got a one-week look at AAA after Mississippi’s season concluded, Malloy gets the quick bump up. Like Langeliers, Malloy would appear to be set up for a major league debut in the next season.
- 9/20/2022: RHP Connor Johnstone activated from Developmental List for AAA Gwinnett
- 9/22/2022: LHP Dylan Dodd assigned to AAA Gwinnett from AA Mississippi; RHPs Mike Soroka and Freddy Tarnok placed on 7-day injured list, retroactive to 9/21, for AAA Gwinnett
Soroka was experiencing some elbow inflammation, which is not a surprising development after such a long lay-off. He will heal and work toward a 2023 comeback. Dylan Dodd completes an impressive run this season from high-A Rome all the way to Gwinnett, placing him firmly in the running for a AAA rotation spot in 2023.
- 9/24/2022: IF Ehire Adrianza activated from the 10-day injured list and RHP Alan Rangel recalled from AA Mississippi; RHP Spencer Strider placed on 15-day injured list (oblique strain); IF Rylan Bannon optioned to AAA Gwinnett
The big news here was Strider likely being out of commission for the rest of the regular season in a bid to have him be 100% for the postseason. Alan Rangel gets his first big league call-up despite an inconsistent seasons as a starter with Mississippi; he’s like simply holding a place until Kyle Muller is ready to take the roster spot.
