BRAVE Update – 1st Quarter, 2018

Michael Soroka

With the season nearly 25% complete, I thought it’d be a good time to update the BRAVE metrics for the Atlanta staff. If you’re unfamiliar with this, check out the post where I introduced it.

If clicking proved too much, BRAVE stands for Better Run Average Valuing Expectancy. It’s a way to split the responsibility for some runs among multiple pitchers who took part in creating them.

Also, this treats unearned and earned runs the same. Why? Well, no matter how you slice it, it’s a team statistic. Even ERA should be treated as, “this is how the team does when this pitcher is on the mound”. Strikeout pitchers are better at avoiding unearned runs than pitch-to-contact guys. After all, your shortstop isn’t going to screw up a strikeout. So, with that in mind, BRAVE will typically be a bit higher than ERAs.

Here’s your update:

Julio Teheran: 3.50  (3.49 ERA)

Sean Newcomb: 3.64 (2.51 ERA)
